Summary
The purpose of The Brown Foundation, Inc. is to distribute funds for public charitable purposes, principally for support, encouragement and assistance to education, the arts and community service. Although the main funding focus is public education, the Foundation also supports programs in the areas of arts and humanities, civic and public affairs, human services, and medicine/science.
History of Funding
Since its inception it has awarded more than $1.60 billion in grants through the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017. More information may be viewed in the 2017 Annual Report at: http://www.brownfoundation.org/annual-report.
Additional Information
The Foundation does not expect to support: grants to religious organizations for religious purposes; testimonial dinners, fundraising events or marketing events; grants intended directly or indirectly to support candidates for political office or to influence legislation; grants to other private foundations; grants to cover past operating deficits or debt retirements.
Eligibility Details
Eligible applicants are Section 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organizations and governmental units in Texas. The Foundation primarily makes grants in Houston and the surrounding areas. As a family-directed foundation, we selectively make grants across Texas and in other parts of the country. They rarely approve unsolicited applications from beyond the greater Houston area.
Deadline Details
The first step to apply to the Foundation is to submit a pre-application form. These are reviewed in four annual cycles:
- Cycle 1: May 1, 2024 - May 31, 2024
- Cycle 2: July 1, 2024 - July 31, 2024
- Cycle 3: October 1, 2024 - October 31, 2024
- Cycle 4: January 1, 2025 - January 31, 2025
New applicants may apply in any of these cycles, while current grantees typically should select the cycle closest to their application last year. If a pre-application is submitted outside of these cycles, it will be reviewed but remain pending until the next cycle opens.
After review, Foundation staff will notify the applicant via email if they have been invited to submit a full proposal or if their application has been denied.
The Foundation advises prospective applicants that from start to finish, their application process may take up to six months.
Award Details
Award amounts vary based on project scope. Recent grants have ranged from $1,000 to more than $2 million.
